Abstract

212,368. Charles, G. Jan. 29, 1923. Shellfish openers. - An oyster-opener comprises a support 12 for the oyster and a knife 5, carried by a reciprocable bar 3 which slides through bearings 4 on standards 2 carried by the base 1, the knife being preferably provided with a hump 19 on the centre line of the knife or obliquely thereto. The support consists of a wooden block 18 carried by a plate 12, having a handprotecting extension 13 grooved at 17, the plate 12 having a tubular pivot 14 which houses a coiled spring 16 and seats within a socket 15. The bar 3 is preferably rectangular in section and is operated by a lever 6 pivoted to the base 1 at 7, which is slotted at 9 for the passage of the bar 3 and is slotted at 10 for engagement with the pin 11. In modifications, the lever 6 is pivoted to the bar 3 and is connected to the base bv an intermediate link. In operation the support is depressed until the junction of the shells is level with the opening-knife 5 which is then forced into the oyster.
