Abstract

212,042. Harris, A. J. Jan. 23, 1923. Reversing.-A device for reversing oil engines by means of an early injection and ignition of fuel comprises a collar 5 loosely mounted on the cam shaft 2 near the pump cam 1, pairs of levers 9, 10 and 12, 13 pivoted to the collar, and means for moving the collar to bring one or other lever of each pair into position to engage the corresponding one of the pump plungers 3, 4 when the lever is actuated by the cam. The levers of each pair are mounted on a common pivot 11, 14, and the levers have raised portions 15 - - 18 extending into the path of the cam, so that the cam actuates one lever 9 on meeting its free end 30 and the other lever 10 on passing the pivot and therefore at a different phase point. The collar 5 is adjusted angularly about the shaft 1 by means of a handle 6, and pivoted fingers 19, 22 are interposed between the free ends of the levers. In order to reduce friction, a collar 25 integral with a fixed plate 26 fits the cam shaft 2 loosely and is provided with raised portions 29 which take the weight of the collar 5 and attached parts when the shaft 2 is vertical. In normal running, the collar 5 is turned so that the parts 16, 18 of the levers 10, 13 are under the pump plungers 3, 4. For reversing, the collar 5 is turned into the neutral position, Fig. 1, until the engine slows down, and then into the position in which the parts 15, 17 are under the pump plungers. As soon as reversal is effected, the collar 5 is returned to the original position. In order to prevent the premature movement of the collar 5 from its neutral to its reversing position, the lever 6 may be suitablv connected to the sliding collar of a centrifugal governor.
