Abstract

211,521. Garrard, C. G. Aug. 28, 1922. Friction gearing having rollers and races with engaging surfaces A, B, Fig. 6, curved in planes containing the main gear axis. Axial pressure F is applied to produce the necessary binding action by distortion of the engaging surfaces, the rollers and races being so constructed and arranged that there is no clearance but that after the pressure is applied the angles which the normals C-E, at the centres of the contact areas, to the surfaces in contact make with a plane C-D at right angles to the main axis do not exceed 10‹. The rollers and races are preferably formed in two or more hardened steel parts. Concave surfaces 7, Fig. 1, on the drying-shaft 1 are engaged by doubly-curved planet-rollers 12 carried in a cage 8 secured to the driven shaft 2..Races 15, 14 carried in the stationary oil-containing casing 3 are pressed by springs 17 into engagement with the rollers 12. The surfaces 7 or the rollers 12 may be divided and pressed apart by springs, or, as shown in Fig. 5, the number of engaging surfaces may be multiplied, the outer race 14 being subdivided and pressed to binding position by compression springs 28.
