Abstract

By using the power and precision of heat source available with laser power; a wire can be made directly into the diameter required from raw material (metal powders) without drawing down. The metal powder is mixed into the exact final wire specification required. This mixture is then made to flow in a channel of the required final wire diameter into an orifice where melting takes place. The laser enables the reaction of powder to finished wire to be completed so quickly that no alloying losses occur. The laser produces a metallic structure in this finished wire that makes the conventional heat treatments to refine wire after drawing operations unnecessary.

Description

SPECIFICATION Fast wire by laser Wire made direct from metal powders (both pure and ferro alloys).
The metal powders are blended together in amounts by percentage, which conform to the specification of the wire required.
The metal powders are then fed by machine into a channel the same diameter as the wire required.
The powders are melted as they flow in the channel by a laser beam.
The melting powder is protected from the air by a gas cover, usually Argon. Because of the very high temperature which the laser can generate, the powder to metal reaction is many times quicker than usual and, therefore, no alloying losses occur and the metal is finegrained in structure and does not require all the heat treatments normal in wire production.
1. Wire is made straight from raw material, i.e. metal powder, into the diameter required and specification requited by use of laser power.
1 A No alloying losses occur during melting of powders because laser power enables raw material to finshed wire cycle to be achieved almost instantaneously.
1 B Speed of reaction - the powder to finished wire - makes unnecessary subsequent heat treatment of wire.
