Abstract
210,961. Batcock, C. E. Oct. 9, 1923. Variable - speed ratchet gearing comprises driving eccentrics 3, 4, 5, connecting-rods 9, 10, oscillating levers 35 . , and ratchets 34 upon a driven shaft 11, the speed being varied by a relative turning of a toothed spindle 19 within the driving-shaft 2. Each eccentric comprises a sheave 6 which slides transversely of the shaft upon an eccentric boss 16 solid with the shaft. Upon each sheave is a rack 17 meshing with the pinion-toothed spindle 19. The spindle 19 is hollow and within it slides a rod 23 with a spiral groove connnection 24, the arrangement being such that when the rod 23 is thrust longitudinally by a rack-and-pinion 31, 32 the speed is varied. Two connecting-rods 9, 10 are actuated by each eccentric to give a double action. A kick-starting lever 39 is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ratchets may consist of nipping-levers 42, Fig. 3, pivoted on oscillating levers 45, and adapted to stub against and drive a central grip ring 43.
