Cops, balls, and naasses of material in compact form. - Yarns are dried by forcing or drawing hot air through them while they are supported in compact form upon perforated spindles 17, Figs. 1 and 2, the spindles being secured to hollow carriers 15 supported, without securing means, upon dishes 11 which are secured to flanges on the hot air pipes 8, 8<a> arranged within the drying-chamber The direction of the flow of air through the yarns may be reversed. A compressor 20 forces air through a heater 22 and a valve 27 into the drying-chamber from which it is exhausted through the yarns on the perforated spindles and the pipes 8, 8<a> by a vacuum pump 25 communicating with the pipes through valves 30 - - 36. To reverse the direction of the air, the valves 30 - - 36 are closed and the valves 28 - - 33 opened so that air passes into the pipes 8, 8<a> and thence through the perforated spindles and the yam to the atmosphere. In a modification, the vacuum pump is dispensed with. In another arrangement, an air blower is substituted for the compressor. The drying may be conducted at a temperature of 200‹ F. and a pressure of from 8 to 9 pounds per square inch.
