Drying materials in long lengths. -Cloth, textile fibre, or other material which can be handled in sheet or stream form is dried by successive jets of hot air directed transversely against the material in a heat-insulated chamber, the same air being circulated repeatedly through the drying chamber, a condenser, and a heater. The walls comprise uprights 20 supporting inner and outer sheathing 21, 22 of asbestos wood, &c. and a packing 23 of asbestos paper, &c., with additional packing 24 if desired. Fabric is passed through the chamber over rollers 1 to 10; in another form, a series of endless carrier belts is provided for the passage of a stream of bulk material. Air circulated by a blower 63 passes into a chamber 30 formed by a partition 31 within the drying chamber, through a number of jet tubes 35 arranged transversely to the material, through the drying chamber, over the top of a partition 42 into a condenser chamber 48, and through a heater 61. The jet tubes 35 may be made of fibre or of asbestos wood, are conical and are provided with a tapered slot 37, Fig. 5, or a series of slots 37<a>, Fig. 6, wider towards the wider end of the tube so that the blast is delivered with uniform intensity from all parts of the tube. The small ends of the tubes may be open, or closed by sockets in the partition 42. The condenser may comprise pipe coils 50 delivering hot water to the wet room or to a boiler feed, and collecting troughs for condensed mois. ture or solvent. The heater comprises separate steam coils 64, 65, 66 with hand-valves and a valve 78 controlled by a thermostat 80 for regulating the temperature of the air.
