Butter spreaders.-In a machine for slicing bread and spreading butter, jam, potted meat or the like on the slices, the butter or like container has sides movable relatively one to another to facilitate cleaning, and registering means are preferably provided whereby the container is detachably secured to the machine. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, two sides only are removable, the spreading plate c, which may be of the form described in Specification 198,021, being screwed to the body of the container and a removable cover g, secured by nuts h and bolts h<1>, being provided. Lapped or luted joints may be provided between the removable sides and the body of the container. The piston, which is packed, is removable through the open back of the container as described in Specification 198,021. Slotted lugs are provided for positioning the container on the machine, the lug b<1> being formed on the spreading-plate and the other lug on the body cf the container. In a modification, both lugs are formed on the spreading-plate. The container may be heated by a metallic strip e secured to the container and having an extension e<1> which is heated by an electric coil or bunsen flame. Alternatively, the container may be jacketed in known manner for a cooling or heating fluid or adapted to hold ice. All the sides of the container may be removable. Specification 105,133 also is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the jacket may be provided with electric means for heating, or the water-jacket connections between adjacent relatively removable sides may comprise tapered, tubular projections on one member which engage sockets on the adjacent member.
