Backing-off lathes. - In a relieving-lathe for backing-off milling-cutters, hobs, taps, &c., a lever e operated from the backing-off cam d engages an abutment g slidably mounted in a member k secured to the spring-pressed transverse slide c and carrying a rotatable thrust-block l. The abutment g normally engages a flat p on the block l, Fig. 5, but by rotating the block until a second flat o engages the abutment, Fig. 4, the slide c is withdrawn by springs q to disengage the tool from the work. The amount of the backing-off movement may be varied by the transverse adjustment of the member k.
