Rudders ; steering-gear. - In rudder arrangements when the stock passes through the deck and has a supporting and brake plate which rests in a deck plate and is encircled by a brake band carried by the deck plate, the two pivoted shoes of the brake are engaged by a right and letf hand screw rotatable by suitable means. The stock 1 has bolted thereto a shallow drumlike plate 2, the bottom part 5 being a V-shaped ring adapted to rest in a deck plate 6, and the periphery 8 forming a seat for two brake shoes 9. The shoes 9 are pivoted at 10 and the jaws 11. are threaded right and left-hand to take corresponding threads on a rod 12 which is centrally supported in a roller bearing 13 and adapted to be rotated to put the brake on or off by bevel or like gearing. Both the plates are castings and formed in halves or segments bolted together.
