456,683. Steering by side plates. McLEOD, R. F., 9, Caldercuilt Road, Glasgow. Feb. 21, 1936, No. 21935 /35. [Class 114] Emergency steering means of the kind wherein plane surfaces mounted upon a vertical axis on the side of the ship are constructed as truncated cylinders G, the surface B of which is flush with the plating P forming the skin of the ship. The member is rotatable about the axis A so that one half of the surface B may be projected beyond the plating when controlling the ship in forward motion and the other half is projected in controlling the ship on reverse motion. Specification 2043/00, [Class 114], is referred to. The device is adapted to be used on hydroplanes as well as ships.
