125,885. Jackson, C. A. Oct. 18. 1918. Rudders; steering-gear.-In a rudder carrier having an annular plate secured to the deck around the aperture through which the stock passes and receives a corresponding plate secured to the stock, a brake drum is fitted to the second plate. The application to the carrier described in Specification 11217/13 is described. The lower plate a bolted to the deck is recessed to receive the upper plate b secured to the stock and tiller arm and fitted with a brake drum g<1> provided with a lined and adjustable brake band n. The brake drum may be V-shaped or grooved, and in some cases a wire rope is placed over the strap n, means being fitted to tighten the rope on the strap, or the rope may be applied directly to the brake drum. Instead of a strap, a flanged ring containing segmental chocks of wood may surround the brake drum.
