Winding and differential pulley - blocks; driving - gear. - In pulley - block lifting- tackle of the kind in which the load pulley or pulleys can be disconnected from the driving-wheel or from one another by a clutch, the load chain which is mounted on an extension of the hub of a second chain wheel or a driving worm wheel, and a sliding coupling ring is employed which serves to couple the two wheels together or to couple one wheel to a stationary part of the framework. In one construction, a sliding clutch member 10 feathered on a sleeve connected to one chain wheel 1, is moved automatically so that it engages albernativelv with teeth on the other chain wheel 2, or on the fixed casing 17. Engagement with the other chain wheel connects the two chain wheels together to function as a differential block, while engagement with the casing fixes the chair wheel 1, thus allowing the block to function as a singlechain wheel block for lifting light loads and for rapidly positioning the unloaded hook. The pull on the load chain in one direction or the other effects the change-over, springs 13 co-operating with slots in the casing to maintain the clatch in one or other of its extreme positions. In a modified form, the chain-wheel 1 is replaced by a driving worm wheel, the worm in this case being connected to the chain wheel or to the fixed casing.
