Pulley-blocks; winches.-Relates to electric coalwhips or hoists, and comprises a hoisting sheave and motor for rotating it, contained in an outer shell which can be slung from a derrick &c. The sheave has a few turns of the hoisting rope passed round it and is normally loose, but is so mounted that its connection to the motor is effected by exerting a sufficient pull on the loose end of the rope. The motor shaft s and the body part b of the sheave, mounted loose in the frame or shell A, are connected by the gearing c, d, e, f, and the one carries the armature a and the other the field magnets a<1>. Upon the body b is loosely mounted the capstan-like sheave-rim g, adapted to engage the slidingly-keyed clutch members h, which are normally retracted by springs. Links n, fitting slots in the rim g, connect levers m engaging levers p acting on the clutches, and thus by exerting sufficient pull on the rope end, the links n are depressed and the rim g clutched to the continuously-revolving sheave b. The clutch may be replaced by some other connection, and other detail modifications may be made.
