Abstract
209,895. Porter, J. R. Nov. 23, 1922. Airships; aerostats; aeroplanes; machines supported by direct fluid pressure apparatus; planes, construction of; propelling; steering and balancing; cars.-An aerial machine comprises a body having a longitudinal annular channel surrounding a fuselage, the body channel and fuselage being constructed on a common curved or bent axis. Fig. 1 shows a machine comprising a body d of circular cross-section traversed by a channel a surrounding a fuselage b having a pilot's seat k at its forward end and a propeller f at its rear end. The fuselage is spaced from the body by radial struts q and is built upon frames m<1>, m<2>. The body is inflated with air under pressure or with a light gas. Air is drawn by the propeller through the channel a and acting upon the arched surfaces the machine is raised vertically. Rudders g and elevators h are arranged at the front of the channel. Fig. 3 shows a modification for forward flight in which the channel a is of Venturi-shape and the upper and lower longitudinal sections of the body have an aerofoil outline. The rudders g, and elevators h are arranged behind the propeller f. Intermediate stays r, in addition to the struts q, support the body d from the fuselage. Radial arms n and rings m support longitudinals o upon which the covering is secured. The fuselage communicates through one or more streamlined passages e with the lower part of the body which has a door p. Specifications 180,467 and 196,131 are referred to. Land wheels and skids.-Skids j and pairs of wheels i are arranged as shown in the two modifications.
