Abstract
768,219. Airships. GOODYEAR AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. April 13, 1955 [Jan. 3, 1955], No. 10612/55. Class 4. A non-rigid airship capable of dynamic lift in forward flight comprises a gas-tight envelope 1 of aerofoil form longitudinally and having five lobed sections 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. The sections 3 and 7 have semi-circular cross-sections closed by air compartment diaphragms 2 and the remaining sections are of substantially rectangular section formed by cateneries 8 joined by cables 9 of proper length to determine the desired longitudinal contours of the envelope after inflation. A pair of power units 10 with landing wheels 11 attached thereto, is located at the intersections of sections 3-4 and 6-7 and supported by cables 9 and bracing cables 12 and 13. A control car 14, with landing wheel 15, is located adjacent and connected to a rigid nose structure 16 and a rigid tail structure 19 carries fins 17 with rudders 18 and an elevator 20. A cargo space 21 is located at the bottom within the envelope substantially at the position of its centre of aerodynamic lift.
