Abstract

209,696. Thompson, W. P., (Union Special Machine Co.). Dec. 2, 1922. Operating clutches.-In a filled-sack sewing-machine having a sewing head adjustable vertically a device is provided to enable the starting lever on the head to be actuated from a treadle on the base, such device automatically compensating for varying positions of the sewing-head. The machine is driven, by a motor mounted on the head, through a drive including a clutch operated by a lever 8 to which is connected a flexible member 19 which is wound and secured in a slot 21 of a wheel 20 having two slots 21, 22. Another cord 23 carrying a weight 24 is wound and secured in the slot 22. A lever 27 pivoted on the shaft of the wheel 20 has on one face teeth 33 adapted to engage teeth 34 on the wheel and on the other face a cam-tooth 35 normally spring-pressed into engagement with a recess in a collar 37. The lever may be depressed by pressure on a treadle 31 connected to an operating cord 28, the tooth 35 then riding out of the recess and engaging the teeth 33 with the teeth 34. The weight 24 compensates for slack or allows extension of the connection between the wheel 20 and the sewing-head.
