Abstract
661,974. Shoe upper conforming machine. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Feb. 27, 1950 [Feb. 26, 1949], No. 5289/49. Class 17 (i). In a shoe upper conforming machine which comes automatically to rest after the tensioning of the upper by the grippers and in which means are provided to reverse the action of the grippers, if it is necessary to readjust the upper on the last, the reversal of the drive is effected by a clutch-operated gear coupling. A shoe is positioned against an inclined shoe rest 6, Fig. 1, and the upper is tensioned by grippers 8, 10 operated from a cam shaft 4 as described in Specification 12304/03, [Class 17]. The cam shaft 4 is driven from a shaft 2, Fig. 2, by a bevel gear 58 engaged by gears 60, 62. Either the bevel gear 60 or 62 is driven when teeth 66 of a clutch 64 engage with teeth 68. The clutch 64 is normally held engaging the gear 60, as shown, to drive the cam shaft 4 in a forward direction by a spring 172 attached to a lever 170 which is connected to the lever 156 by a rod 166. When a treadle 178 connected to the lever 170 is depressed the lever 156 is pivoted through the linkage described to engage the clutch 64 with the gear 62 to reverse the drive of the cam shaft 4. The shaft 2 is driven by a clutch member 74 from a pulley 70, the starting and stopping of this drive at the appropriate stages of the cycle is effected by mechanism as described in Specification 7005/00, [Class 17], on depression of a treadle 146. In operation, to reverse the drive of the cam shaft 4 to release the gripped upper the treadle 178 is depressed, which first engages the clutch 64 with the reversing gear 62 and then, by contacting the treadle 146, engages the clutch 74. To prevent reversing the machine except on completion of the first stage of the cycle, a finger 192, connected by a linkage to a rackshaft 158 mounting the lever 156, engages a wheel 202 fast on the cam shaft 4 and is only able to enter a recess therein at the appropriate stage of the cycle. Specifications 150,424, [Class 17], and 396,086 also are referred to.
