Abstract

261,829. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., Elliott, H. E., and Gouldbourn, J. Aug. 22, 1925. Starting and stopping-gear; operating or controlling clutches and the like.-A, sewing-machine is stopped in one of a number of definite positions at the will of the operator by a single controlling cam or like member of the machine, the particular position being determined by the manual movement of a treadle &c. which selects one of a number of constantly reciprocating intermediate members. The device is described as applied to a boot-sole sewing-machine which may be stopped with the needle either in or out of the work. A cam 19 secured to the driven shaft 1 effects while in movement continuous oscillation of a pair of levers 16, 17 mounted on each side thereof these movements being alternatively transmitted through pivoted spring-supported fingers 14, 15 to a double lever 7 operating tho clutch brake combination 9 splined on the shaft 1. The fingers 14, 15 are alternatively put out of action so as to slide idly beneath the lever 7 by a rocker 28 carrying blocks 22, 23 which bear on the fingers and actuated by a two-position hand lever 30. In order to allow the shaft to rotate continuously the finger which otherwise would be in operative position is held down by a block 36 moved by a treadle-rod 35. An eccentric stop 39 is provided to limit the movement of the lever 7 when desired so that the brake may be taken off without the engagement of the clutch. Specifications 142,170, 228,208 and 255,532 are referred to.
