Abstract

161,668. Bates, A., and British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd. Jan. 12, 1920. Guards, controlling.-Relates to control devices for power operated moulding cutting or like machines for boot or shoe parts of the type described in Specification 15918/02, in which both the operator's hands are employed to start the machine and keep it running, and consists in the combination with automatic mechanism, stopping the machine at the completion of each cycle, of mechanism which stops the machine should the operator release either of two controls with which his hands are respectively engaged. The mechanism is arranged so that the machine cannot be restarted unless both controls have been previously released from their operative position. Applied to a twin-sole-moulding machine, the clutch is operated by a link 10 which moves longitudinally and downwards to engage the clutch, one end of the link being pivoted to a bell crank lever impelled in clutch engaging direction by a spring. Hand levers 41, 42, Fig. 3, each having a latch 47. are connected by links 40 and an equalizing bar to a link 35 operating a bell crank lever 31, Fig. 1, pivoted to a push bar 29 having a shoulder 28 normally engaging a lever 23 pivoted on the driving shaft 1. This lever supports a bearing for a plunger 20 reciprocated by an eccentric 27 on the shaft 1 and carrying a roller 17 adapted to engage below the rod 10. This mechanism is so arranged that the hand levers must be grasped and lifted to release the latches, and then pressed down to carry the roll 17 from beneath the link 10 and engage the clutch. Should one hand lever be released, the next reciprocation of the plunger 20 will carry the roll beneath the link and lift it above a stop 63 on the plunger bearing, withdrawing the clutch. The driving- shaft 1 drives a power shaft 53 through reducing gearing. This shaft carries two cams 51 which effect the automatic stoppage of the machine by engaging a lever 54 having a depending slotted link 56 to lift the push-bar 29 and stop the machine. This movement disengages the shoulder 28 from the lever 23, so that before the machine can be restarted the hand levers must be raised to retract the push-bar 29 and re-engage the shoulder 28 with the lever 23.
