With this object in view the invention contemplates the provision o-f means actuated from the cam shaft on stopping the machine to actuate the tension device to release the tension on the thread, and a latch arranged to hold the tension device in tension releasing position until the machine is again started into operation, and to be then actuated from the cam shaft to release the tension device. The present inventio also contemplates the constructions, combi nations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages ofv which will. be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which illustrate a Welt shoe sewing machine provided with specific embodiments'of the several features of the invention. 1
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the head of the machine; Figure 2 is a plan view with a portion of the easing broken away to show underlying parts; Figure 3 is a view in sectional elevation of a portion of the machine illustratingparticularly the mechanism associated with the cam shaft; Figure 4 is a detail view illustrating, in side elevation the mechanism for controlling the thread tension during the first stitch forming cycle; and Figure 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the stop lever of the machine and its operating cam.
The present application is a division of application Serial No. 134,319, filed April 1, 1937. Excent as hereinafter pointed out, the various parts of the machine illustrated in the drawings are constructed, arranged and operated as in the machine of applicants prior Patent No. 2,041,945. The machine is provided with a curved hook needle 2, arranged to enter the work from the channel side, a curved awl 4 entering the work fromthe welt s ide, a thread finger 6, a looper 8, and a take-up 10. Work piercing and retracting movements are imparted to the needle and awl, and thread handling movements are imparted to the thread finger, looper, and take-up from the cam shaft i2 through connections which are the same as'those embodied in the machine of applicants' prior Patent No. 2,041,945. The machine isalsoprovided with a work rest and a welt guide constructedQarranged and actuated'as in the machine of applicants prior Patent No. 2,041,945, with the exception that a separate cam lever is provided for actuating. the locking pawl of the welt guide mechanism and is arranged to engage an arm projecting from one of the rear supporting links of the welt guide carrier. f The, drivingland. stopping mechanism of the machine illustrated. inthe drawings is also the same, as, that embodiedin the machine of appli cants prior Patent No. 2,041,945 comprising a high speed treadle controlled clutch for driving the camshaft from. the vertical shaft [4 through the spiral gears l5 and I8 and an automatically controlled reversely, driven slow speed clutch, thedriving member of whichis formed in a gear loosely mounted on the cam shaft, The driven member of. the slow speed clutch is indicated at 22,. The. timing cam by which it is movedinto andi outtof engagement with the driven member of the clutch, in stopping the, machine is indicated at 24., The bell crank which is vibrated bythe cam while the machine is in operation and which is locked against movement when the machine is to be stopped, is indicated at 26. The yieldingly mounted slide which carries the locking pin is indicated at 28 and the locking pin which is controlled through connections to the starting and stopping treadle is indicated at 30. The gear 20 of the slow speed reverse driving and stopping clutch is continuously driven as in the machine of applicants prior patent.
Mechanism for stopping the machine also includes the stop arm and cam follower of the mechanism disclosed in applicants prior Patent No. 2,041,945, the stop arm (see more particularly Figure 5) being indicated at 32, the follower at the outer end of the arm being indicated at 34, and the cam slot in a cam disk 36 on the cam shaft 12 which is engaged by the follower during the reverse rotation of the cam shaft in stopping the machine being indicated at 38. The stop arm 32, through connections substantially the same as those embodied in the machine of applicants prior Patent No. 2,041,945, retracts the welt guide as the machine stops and also moves the devices which look the welt gripping and cutting mechanism out of operation while the machine is running to a position which permits the welt gripping and cutting mechanism to be thrown into operation by a pull on the welt.
The thread tension mechanism of the illustrated machine is substantially the same-as" the thread tension mechanism of appliea'nts prior patents (see Figs. 1, 2 and 4) and comprises a wheel 40 over which the thread passes, a drum 42 fast on the shaft of the wheel, and a brake engaging the drum pivotally mounted upon a spring pressed bell crank 46. Also, as in the machines of applicants prior patents, a tension releasing rod 48 is provided, the upper end of which bears against the bell crank 46 and the lower end of which has a pin and slot engagement with an arm 50 fast on the hub of the stop arm 32, the arrangement being such that the rod 48 is actuated during the reverse rotation of the cam shaft in stopping the machine to release the tension on the thread. In the patented machines the rod 48 is actuated to apply the thread tension during the first portion of the forward rotation of the cam shaft in starting a new seam. In the illustrated machine, this mode of operation is undesirable, as in such case the resistance offered by the thread tension during the action of the thread finger, looper and take-up, during the formation of the first stitch, might be sufficient to cause the end of the thread to be pulled from the grip of the welt and thread gripping jaws. Accordingly, in the illustrated machine, means are provided for holding the tension released until the latter part of the first stitch forming cycle, at which time the tension is applied. As illustrated (see particularly Fig. 4) these means comprise a fixed abutment or latch 52 arranged to engage the shoulder 54 of a recess formed in the rod 48, a leaf spring 56 acting to press the upper end of the rod towards the latch 52, and a pin 58 on the hub of a cam actuated lever 60, which during the latter part of the first stitch forming cycle, engages the surface of a projection 62 on the rod 48 and moves the rod to release it from the latch 52.
The nature and scope of the invention having been indicated, and a machine embodying the several features of specifically described, what is claimed is:
1. An inseam shoe sewing machine having, in combination, stitch forming and work feeding devices, a cam shaft and suitable connections the invention having been for actuating said devices, a thread tension device, means operating on stopping the machine to impart a reverse movement to the cam shaft, means for limiting the reverse movement of the cam shaft comprising a cam on the cam shaft provided with a slot and a follower to engage the slot on reverse rotation of the cam shaft, connections actuated from the cam follower on reversal of the cam shaft to actuate the tension device to release the thread tension, a latch to hold the tension device in tension releasing position, and means actuated from the cam shaft during forward rotation to free the tension device from the latch.
2. An inseam shoe sewing machine having, in combination, stitch forming and work feeding devices, a cam shaft and suitable connections for actuating said devices, a thread tension device, means operative on stopping the machine to impart a reverse movement to the cam shaft, means for limiting the reverse movement of the connections including a tension release rod connected to be shifted axially by the cam follower on reversal of the cam shaft to actuate the tension device to release the thread tension, a latch to hold the tension release rod in tension release position, and means actuated from the cam shaft during forward rotation to shift said release rod laterally away from the latch to free the tension device.
3. An inseam shoe sewing machine having, in combination, stitch forming and work feeding devices, a cam shaft and suitable connections for actuating said devices, a thread tension device, means operative on stopping the machine to impart a reverse movement to the cam shaft, means for limiting the reverse movement of the cam shaft comprising a. cam on the cam shaft provided with a slot and a follower to engage the slot on reverse rotation of the cam shaft, a
