Gearing for stopping and starting machinery; variable-speed belt gearing.-Means for controlling the motor drive of a sewing-machine so as to permit of very low speed comprises a coned pulley in contact with which a belt is held by a belt-fork under control of an operator to vary the - speed by varying the amount of slip. In the arrangement shown a unit consisting of a base 5 supporting a control-treadle 8 and a standard 6 carrying a motor 7 is arranged in association with a sewing-machine 1. The spindle 10 of the motor carries a loose pulley 12 and a coned fast pulley 11 affording a slight shoulder 13 and having an annular part 14 with a groove 15. A belt-fork is mounted on the motor casing and comprises roller-carrying rods 21 guided in spring-containing pockets 19 and connected by a cross-bar 22. The belt-fork is moved against the action of the springs, to shift the belt 17 from the pulley 12 to the pulley 11, by means of a lever 26 connected to the treadle. The machine is started at very low speed by the slipping engagement of the belt with the shoulder 13, the slip decreasing as the belt is moved across the conical part of the pulley. A brake 31 is operated by the engagement of the upper rod 21 with a long lever 28.
