Aug. 14, 1923, [Convention date]. carriage-returning mechanism; letter-spacing mechanism.-A device for returning a stop-carriage or other member of a line-printing typewriter of the kind in which the platen is stationary during the setting of the line, comprises a rotatable shaft connected to the member by means of a friction or like clutch: separate friction clutches may be provided for returning members that are advanced unequally, for instance, as applied to the machines described in Specifications 182,908 and 208,106, a stop-carriage, and a scalepointer for indicating the width of the line. A sleeve 7. supported in brackets 2<a>, 2<b>, carries a loose sprocketwheel 17 connected by a chain to a stopcarriage. A shaft 6, mounted in the sleeve and connected thereto by pins 10, 12 passing through slots, is provided with a toothed clutch-member 11 adapted to engage a toothed clutch-member 19 which is frictionally coupled to the sprocket-wheel by means of a leather disc 18, pressed upwards by springs. The shaft 6 is provided also with a collar 9 having inclines cooperating with inclines on a stationary collar 8. The chain unwinds from the sprocket-wheel when the stop-carriage advances. To return the stopcarriage, the sleeve 7 is started, and the collar 9 thereupon rides over the collar 8 and permits a spring 16 to depress the shaft 6 and bring the clutch-member 11 into engagement with the clutch-member 19. When the stop-carriage is arrested, the sprocket-wheel slips and, on completion of a revolution, the shaft is raised by the collar 9, and the clutch-member 11 is released- For returning a second member the clutch and sprocket-wheel may be duplicated, or the shaft 6 may carry a frictionally-coupled collar 13 having teeth which, when the shaft is depressed, engage teeth 22 on a pulley 21, loose on the sleeve 7 and connected bv a cord to the member. The collar 13 is loosely mounted on extension 28 of the shaft, and is pressed, by means of a spring 14, into contact with a leather disc 29. The cord may be wound on a drum gearing with a rack which carries a scale-pointer for indicating the width of the line. Specification 335/03 also is referred to.
