Abstract

610,555. Typewriting, &c., machines. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W.H., FLAWN, P. A., and LANEGAN, F. E. Feb. 4, 1947, No. 3725. [Class 100(iv)] In or for an imprinting machine, such as a tabulating or calculating machine, of the kind in which a continuous length of stationery is automatically fed by electrically driven means past a writing position in throws of two different lengths, the shorter throw corresponding to line spacings and the longer throw to form heading spacings on the stationery, controlling means is provided for stopping the operation of the stationery feeding means at the end of the longer throw, comprising a twopart member arranged for rotation as a unit in synchronism with the feeding means one part being driven for rotation in synchronism, and the drive between the two parts being releasable to permit circumferential adjustment, and means operable at the end of the longer throw by an abutment surface on the other part of the rotatable member to break the circuit controlling the driving means for the feed, without disconnecting the drive between the two parts of the rotatable member. The stationery is fed by means of a pair of pinwheels engaging marginal perforations therein and carried on a shaft 5, Fig. 3, driven from the normal stationery feeding mechanism of the machine in short and long throws through a gear train, not shown. On the shaft 5 is mounted a gearwheel 9, which drives a gear-wheel 12 through an intermediate gear 10 mounted on a quadrant 11. The gear 12 is attached by bolts 15 passing through holes therein to a disc 14, the bolts passing through slots 16 in the disc, and the gear being mounted on a shaft 13. The disc 14 carries two studs 17 which engage a spring leaf 18 mounted on an insulating block 19 and operate the plunger 20 of a micro-switch to break the circuit controlling the feed mechanism. In order that the studs will contact the leaf at the end of the longer throw, the disc 14 can be adjusted relatively to the gear 12 within the limits of the slots 16. The gears 10 and 12 are interchangeable with wheels of different sizes to adapt the device to stationery forms of different lengths, and the quadrant 11 is rotatable about the shaft 5 to enable the wheel 10 to mesh with various sizes of wheels 12. In a modification, Fig. 4. the disc is separate from the gear and operatively connected thereto by a clutch 40, 41, the member 41 being fixed to the shaft 13. To adjust the disc relatively to the gear, the clutch is disengaged by pressing a knob 45 and the disc rotated to the desired position. Specification 408,125 is referred to.
