Abstract
209,578. Wade, H., (Mercury Mills, Ltd.). Dec. 7, 1922. Circular machines.-A rotarv needle cylinder machine is provided with means for intermittently raising and lowering the high splicing finger 3 and with co-operating means, which cause the finger to be in operation for increasing periods in successive revolutions, so as to knit a high spliced area of tapering configuration. A rotating cam 14, having high and low cam portions 14, 14 acts through intermediate levers &c. 5 - - 12 to throw the finger 3 into or out of feeding position. To the hub 19 of the cam 14 is secured a disc 21 with a recess, the shoulder 22 of which is circular and concentric with the hub. Arcuate segments 23, 23 the peripheries of which are flush with the high portion 14b of the cam 14 are moved towards each other until the length of the low portion 14 on which the roller 13 runs is reduced to zero and by subsequently gradually increasing their distance apart a high splice of inverted V configuration is produced. A pin 32, Fig. 4, screwed into the segment 23 extends through a pinion 31 journaled on the hub of a pinion 24 and meshing with a gear 29, Fig. 3. Another gear 26 connected by a friction clutch to the gear 29 meshes with the pinion 24. The dimensions of the gears are such that the segment 23 moves a short way relatively to the cam part 14 at each revolution of the shaft 15. The pin 32 also extends through jaws 36 on a slide 35 provided with other jaws 39 through which a pin 37 fixed to the segment 23 extends. As the pin 32 moves round it carries with it the slide 35 and causes the pin 37 and segment 23 to move in the opposite direction. The friction clutch consists of a ring 43 which is caused to expand and engage a flange 44 of the gear 29 by means of a cam 45 on a bell crank controlled by the pattern drum 17. The segments 23, 23a may also be moved apart against the action of a spring by a flexible member or a series of steel balls in a groove. The finger 3 is held out of feeding position by the action of the pattern mechanism during the knitting of the parts of the stocking which are not required to be spliced.
