Abstract
828,113. Knitting-machines. PALIZ-HOLDING A.G. Sept. 25, 1957 [Sept. 26, 1956], No. 30110/57. Class 74 (2). As the cam lock of a hand knitting- machine is traversed, a toothed wheel 23 or 23<SP>1</SP> is rotated by engagement with the teeth 14 of a knockover comb or of a separate rack and that rotation is transmitted to the appropriate one of fabric take-down rollers 27, 28, Figs. 1 and 3, or of rollers 27<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5. In Figs. 1 and 3, the wheel 23 is secured to one end of a shaft 22, to the other end of which is fixed a bevel pinion 21 which drives pinions 19, 20 secured to shafts 17, 18 on which the rollers 27, 28 are loosely mounted. As the cam lock is traversed, the friction between rollers and fabrics drags the rollers along their shafts until buttress teeth on the trailing roller are clutched to and driven by coacting teeth 29 (say) on the roller shaft and similar teeth on the leading roller are brought out of engagement with the corresponding coacting teeth 30 (say) on its shaft. Thus, the trailing roller is rotated to pull down the fabric under the advancing needles. A rod 33 prevents winding of a hanging thread on the rotating roller or entangling of a thread in the clutch teeth. If the rollers are so positioned that it is the leading one that must be rotated, the toothed clutches will be located at the inner, adjacent ends of the shafts 17, 18 and the gear 21 will be mounted at the same end of the shaft 22 as is the wheel 23. In Fig. 5, the rollers 271, 28<SP>1</SP> are fixed to their shafts 171, 18<SP>1</SP> and the drive transmitting shaft 221 is borne in a bracket 24<SP>1</SP> pivoted at 34 so that, as the lock is traversed, the reaction between toothed wheel 23<SP>1</SP> and the teeth 14 swings the bracket into that position in which a pinion on shaft 22<SP>1</SP> engages only that one of pinions 19<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>1</SP> which is associated with the trailing roller. The pair of rollers may be replaced by a single roller which is long enough, or which has sufficient axial movement to ensure that it is always beneath the advancing needles. The rollers may be urged against the fabric by springs 26; or they may be made of a yieldable material. The surface of the rollers may be grooved axially or helically, or may bear protuberances or brushes. As the lock is traversed, the needles swing the leading one of cams 101, 102, about pivot 110, or 111, against the action of a weak spring, from the position in which its tip engages a rail 115 into that position in which it engages a cam 103; and the needles are then retracted by that leading earn and cam 103, and are advanced by the trailing cam.
