Abstract
The bark of trees such as Terminalia Arjuna which contain calcium oxalate, or the oxalate mechanically concentrated therefrom as described in Specifications 201,131 and 208,684, is treated for the production of oxalic acid and alkali oxalates. The bark is preferably first treated with water or alcohol to extract soluble matter such as tannins. The finely-powdered bark, or the oxalate concentrate, is then ground or agitated preferably at ordinary temperature with dilute sulphuric or nitric acid, filtered, and oxalic acid recovered from the filtrate. Alternatively, the reaction mass may be evaporated to dryness, and oxalic acid extracted with alcohol. Alkali-carbonate solution may be used instead of mineral acid, the product being an alkali oxalate. Specification 110,837 also is referred to.
