Abstract

205,631. Iveson, J. H. Aug. 31, 1922. Guards.-In wringing and mangling machines, two tiltable frames carry between them a pair of guard rollers, disposed respectively in front of and behind the squeezing-rollers, are supported pivotally on the machine frame by the guard roller axles, and are movable transversely to bring either guard roller into contact with the lower sqeeezing-roller, the axle of the other guard then acting as a fulcrum for the frames. Plates c carry between them guard rollers a, a', the axles m, m<1> of which project through the plates and rest on ledges d formed on the main frames e or on brackets secured thereto. Recesses f, as shown or below the level of the ledges d, are so arranged that one axle m<1> may rest therein and serve as a pivot for the plates c while the other roller a is held by gravity, with or without the assitance of springs g, in frictional contact with the lower squeezing-roller b on the feeding side thereof. Articles are fed beneath the roller a, the axle m<1> being preferably above the nip of the rollers b, b<1>. When the feed is reversed, the plates can be shifted by handles j to bring the rollers a<1> against the roller b, the axle m then serving as a pivot. The space above the rollers a, a' is guarded by boards i carried in lugs of the plateg c. The rollers a, a<1> may be provided' with rubber or like driving-rings h at each end,. and may be covered with rubber; they may be connected by a driving-chain, which may also pass over a sprocket provided on the upper roller b<1> and of equal diameter thereto, in order to ensure that articles coming into contact with the rear guard roller shall pass beneath it. Stopping machinery by movement of guards.- Where the machine is driven by an electromotor, excessive movement of a guard roller may break the supply circuit.
