Abstract

205,571. Grabham, A. July 19, 1922. Bottles, cans, and cylindrical articles, washing, disinfecting, and drying. - In machines of the type described in Specification 18106/07 wherein the bottles or milk-churns &c. are inverted in crates and passed over tanks of washing and rinsing fluid which is thrown against their outer and inner surfaces by paddle wheels, and finally treated with steam, means are provided for superheating the steam so as to obtain better sterilization and leave the bottles dry. The tank a is divided into compartments by partitions b, the level of the fluids is kept constant by overflow pipes h and the fluids are impelled by paddle wheels c, pumps, or injectors against the bottles inverted in crates d moved by conveyers g. Each compartment is maintained at a higher temperature than the preceding one by steam-jets controlled by thermostatic devices. The superheater comprises a coil enclosed in a casing p and heated by gas, the steam is led from the bottom of the coil through pipes l<1> and made to impinge on the entire inner and outer surfaces of the bottles. An injector m<1> may be arranged to force a mixture of steam and water into the interior of the bottles.
