Abstract
6376. Loew, C. H. March 14. Sterilizing beer.-Bottled beer is pasteurized by bringing the bottles by means of a rotary carrier 30 under sprays of water, of successively increasing and decreasing temperature, from chambers 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47 having perforated bottoms, the water being used repeatedly. The carrier 30 rotates upon rollers 21 in a tank 10 having an opening 13, through which trays 33 holding the bottles are supplied to, or taken from, compartments upon the carrier. The tank 10 is divided by an insulated partition 50 into compartments A, B, each of which contains a pump 48, 49. The pump 48 supplies hot water, preferably obtained from the bottom of the compartment A, which is fitted with steam-pipes, to the chamber 44 through a pipe 480, cold water is supplied by pipes 410, 470 to the chambers 41, 47, and the water from the bottom of the compartment B is supplied by the pump 49 and pipes 490 to the chambers 42, 46. The chambers 41 &c. communicate by side openings, and alternate chambers 41, 43, &c. are deeper than the others. The bottles are thus subjected to warming sprays under the chambers 41, 42, 43, to a pasteurizing-spray under the chamber 44, and to cooling-sprays under the chambers 45, 46, 47. A motor 60 rotates the pumps 48, 49 through gearing 64, 66, 69, and the carrier 30 through gearing 64, 66, 607, 610, 613, 36. The steam-supply to the compartment A may be controlled by a thermostat.
