Abstract

Spring shackles.-In spring suspensions for road vehicles and of the kind comprising a main laminated spring and a supplemental leaf spring to which the main spring is connected to transfer a part of the load from the main spring to the supplemental spring, the main spring has a rigid lever pivoted to at least one end thereof, the lever having an arm adapted to apply a part of the load from the main spring to substantially mid-length of the supplemental spring, which is semi-elliptic and supported so as to permit its opposite ends to flex. Fig. 1 shows a cross spring suspension in which the main spring m transfers the load stress to levers L pivoted on perches p attached to the axle housing. The levers L transfer part of the stress to the centre of the supplemental leaf springs s, the ends of which are free to flex and are attached or pivoted to the frame F and bolt b on lever L respectively. Fig. 6 shows a longitudinal spring suspension in which the main spring m<4> attached to the axle a<4> is attached to a lever L<4>, one end of which is fulcrumed on a link p<4> carried by a leaf spring n, and the other end bears on the supplemental spring s<4> as shown. The ends of the spring s<4> are mounted as shown. The shape of the levers and the methods of connecting them to the main and supplemental springs may be varied.
