Abstract

694,386. Spring suspensions; preventing lateral canting. GIRLING, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1952. [Feb. 24, 1951], No. 4555/51. Class 108 (ii). In a vehicle suspension incorporating road springs of the leaf type, a transversely extending anti-roll torsion bar is formed at its ends with portions which extend longitudinally of the vehicle and are secured directly to the road springs themselves. In the arrangement shown in which an axle a is supported by a pair of leaf springs c, c a torsion bar d is arranged substantially in alignment with eyes e, e at one end of the spring and cranked ends f, f of the bar are secured in rubber bushes g held in clips h secured to the springs. Each clip is located by a bolt passing through the clip and an eye k formed at the end of one of the spring leaves. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the torsion bar is mounted adjacent the axle, and each end of the bar is mounted in a rubber bush in a lug fixed to the axle or a spring pad and lying just above the spring. The bar extends beyond the spring where it is cranked to extend parallel with the spring and then inwardly thereof where it is secured in a rubber bush fixed to the spring at a point spaced from the axle. In another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the central part of the bar is mounted adjacent each end in a rubber bush fixed to the axle on the inner side of the spring. The ends of the bar are cranked outwardly to extend parallel with the springs to which they are secured in rubber bushes at points spaced from the axle.
