Abstract

221,247. Lutman, C. H., and Ardern, J. L. May 5, 1923. Laminar springs. - Relates to leaf springs comprising two elements normally separated from each other for the greater portion of their length, but progressively contacting with each other so as to stiffen the spring in accordance with increase of load. To resist torsional stresses, the leaves are formed of tapering width, the widest portions being in permanent contact with each other. As shown, a quarterelliptic spring comprises a substantially straight leaf a and a curved leaf b secured together and to the chassis k at their widest portions and having their diverging ends connected by a shackle e carrying at its lower end a support f of rubber &c. The support f may be eccentrically mounted to adjust the distance between the ends of the leaves, and in addition of alternatively, the bolt m connecting the shackle to the leaf a may be adjustable in a slot m<1>. An additional support f<1> may be provided beneath the leaf a. A semi-elliptic spring may be constructed in a similar manner of two leaves secured at their central and widest positions, or two quarter-elliptic springs may be connected by a yoke i as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In a modified form of connection, shown in Figs. 7 and 8, between the leaves and the yoke i, the ends of the leaves are rounded and fit in a similarly shaped recess t in the yoke, securing bolts u, v being provided. The shackle e, Figs. 5 and 6, may be replaced by bolt having a strap u, Fig. 10, secured to the lower leaf b and prevented from longitudinal movement thereon by a distance piece o. The shank of the bolt passes through the upper leaf a and carries resilient buffers p, p<1>, adjustment being effected by nuts r, s. Three-quarter elliptic and full elliptic springs are formed by combining a quarter-elliptic and a semi-elliptic spring and two semi-elliptic springs respectively.
