Abstract

Testing. - The effect of light on textiles and other materials is determined by arranging the material to be tested around the inner surface of a casing 1 enclosing an electric arc lamp 4 suspended from brackets 5. Both ends of the casing are open and a fan or blower 9 is fitted at the lower end to ensure a continuous supply of air through the casing 1 whereby the temperature is regulated. The interior of the casing 1 is coloured a faint blue-white to modify the rays from the lamp 4 by absorbing the ultra-violet and heat rays. Frames 3 inserted in openings 2 carry the materials to be tested and may be rotated with the casing 1 on rollers 6. A water column consisting of two glass cylinders arranged one within the other, the space between them being supplied with water, may also be fitted to keep the test objects cool. The speed of the fan may also be regulated by a thermostatic device.
