Abstract

204,386. Leadley, H. W. June 27,1922. Track apparatus for actuating signals on trains and stopping trains.-Comprises a particular arrangement of ramp-operated apparatus whereby the brakes are applied and the steam valve closed automatically when a locomotive over-runs a signal set to " danger." Two locking devices are also provided to hold the ramp raised in the danger position, one operating automatically each time the signal is placed to " danger," and releasable from the signal box, the other operating when a signal wire &c. breaks, and not releasable from the signal box. A ramp a, Fig. 6, is supported on crank discs c<1>, one of which is rotated so as to raise the ramp when the signal is placed to " danger." A shoe e, Fig. 2, in a guide f, when raised by the ramp operates the brake-valve i by a slot and pin connection j. A fall of pressure in the brakepipe k operates a piston in a cylinder j<1> so as to close the throttle lever q by means of linkwork m, n, p. Operation of the valve i by hand therefore closes the throttle. The ramp is weighted so as to tend to assume the " danger " position and is held in that position by a spring catch r locked by a member r<1> which is passed into an aperture in the horizontal arm of the catch. Member r<1> is moved into engagement by a spring s acting through linkwork, and is disengaged by a pedal t, Fig. 8, in the signal-box. The pedal is locked in the depressed position by a catch t' when the lever is pulled to " clear," and is released by a link u<1> when the lever is returned to " danger." If the operating connection between the ramp and signal-box breaks, the ramp moves to a higher position than otherwise so that a lever w connected with the disc c' by a link w<1> operates a plunger v to lock the member r so that it can only be redeased by hand. The valve i may be closed by a seal so as to record its operation. The apparatus may be modified for a pressure system, and for use on electric locomotives, in which case a switch is actuated.
