Abstract
8149. Enk, K. April 13. Locomotives.-A track contact operated in connexion with semaphores, co-operates with an engine contact to blow a whistle and give a visible signal on the engine, at the same time applying the brakes. The track contact b is raised, when the signal goes to danger, into the path of the engine contact h, which when moved opens a valve in the pipe e to admit steam from the dome d into the whistle pipe g and into a branch pipe k leading to a cylinder m. A spring-held piston is thus forced back, and a slide r in the brake pipe is opened. The movement of this piston opens the side cylinder s to steam pressure, and its piston, also spring-held, is then forced upwards, and a miniature signal u is operated. This signal may be replaced by a lamp.
