Abstract

7586. Jones, H. J. May 13, 1907, [date appliedfor under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Brakes. - Semaphore signals are actuated by electromagnets energized from contacts on the track, and contacts are closed by the movement of the semaphore spindle to energize track contacts for actuating brake valves on the engines. A train entering a section connects the insulated track-rail sections 7, 8, and closes the circuit from rail 7 through wire 30, battery 12, wire 32, and magnet 26 to rail 8. The magnet 26 draws the armature 21 which forms part of the toothed segment 20 gearing with the wheel 19 on the spindle 14 of the semaphore, which carries a ' danger' and a 'clear' arm and also a lantern 17. The danger' arm is thereby exposed until the train passes out of the section over the contacts 9, 10 to close the circuit to the magnet 25 and thereby rotate the semaphore to show the clear' signal. When the signal is set to 'danger,' the arm 22 makes contact with the spring 23, and serves to close a circuit from the rail 6, through wire 30, battery 12, wires 32, 38, arm 22, spring 23, and wire 37, to a shoe on an engine entering the section, and through an electro-magnet for operating the brake valve, to the rails 6.
