Abstract
A casing to be secured to a cooking oven comprises an upper plate 6 and a lower plate 7 and has an inlet opening 8 for fumes and air to pass through a passage 3 and escape through an outlet opening 9. The fumes and air pass through passages 4 in a ceramic block 1 held by supports 5. The passages 4 have linings of catalysts such as salts of platinum or other precious metals, and an electrical heating resistance 2 raises the temperature of the fumes and air and the block 1. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Catalytic cell for the treatment of cooking fumes
The present invention relates to the field of construction of domestic cooking ovens, and has for its object a catalytic cell for the treatment of the fumes of such ovens.
The catalytic cells, intended to absorb the fumes and the odours escaping from domestic cooking ovens, from Dutch ovens, or from autonomous cooking ovens, actually existing are generally constituted by a cylindrical block of ceramic material provided with piercings coated with various oxides, and by a heating resistance incorporated in the block. Thus, under the effect of the heat released by the resistance, there is produced a catalytic oxidation destroying the fumes and the odours.
However, these existing cells involve substantial encumbrance and difficulty of dismantling.
The present invention has as one aim to mitigate these disadvantages.
It has, in effect, for its object a catalytic cell for the treatment of the fumes of domestic cooking ovens, constituted essentially by a small block of ceramic material coated with various oxides in several rows of parallel passages, by a heating resistance surrounding the small block, and by an outlet passage in which is placed the assembly of small blockresistance.
Conforming to a characteristic of the invention, the outlet passage is constituted by two plates of enamel sheet iron, welded together, of which the lower plate is provided with an opening for the communication with the interior of the oven through the intermediary of an opening provided in the upper wall of the casing of the said oven.
The invention will be better understood due to the following description, which refers to a preferred manner of construction, given by way of non-limitative example, and explained with reference to the annexed schematic drawing, of which the single Figure is a view in perspective of a cell in conformity with the invention, the upper plate of the outlet passage being partially broken away.
The catalytic cell for treatment of the fumes of domestic cooking ovens is constituted, in the showing in the annexed drawing, by a small block 1 secured between the limbs of a heating resistance 2 in the form of a U, and by an outlet passage 3 in which is inserted the assembly of the block 1-resistance 2.
The block 1 is advantageously constituted of ceramic material, and is provided with several, for preference three, rows of passages 4 parallel to each other and to the limbs of the resistance 2. This block is maintained near to the curved part of the resistance 2 by means of two supports 5 welded on the resistance 2.
The passages 4 of the block 2 are coated with catalysts, such as salts of precious metals, there being known salts of palladium, of platinum, of rhodium, of ruthenium, or of osmium.
The outlet passage 3 is constituted by an upper plate 6, and by a lower plate 7, of enamelled sheet iron, welded together. One of the two plates may equally well be constituted by the vault of the casing of the oven, the other plate then being fixed upon it. The lower plate 7 is provided with an opening 8 which opens, in the position of employment of the cell, between the curved part of the resistance 2 and the block 1, and communicates with the interior of the oven through the intermediary of an analogous opening provided in the upper wall of the casing of the said oven.
This outlet passage 3 extends above the oven as far as the opening at the rear face of the oven from the opening of the upper wall of the casing, and at its rear part presents an opening 9 for insertion of the resistance 2 with the block 1, and for release of the treated fumes.
The block 1, which has the form of a briquette, can equally well be constituted of silica, of calcium carbonate, or of any other inert support for the catalysts which are employed.
The cell in conformity with the invention functions in the following manner:
The fumes to be treated enter the passage 3 through the opening 8, and are heated by the resistance 2. They then travel in the passages 4 in the block 1, where the exides coating the said passages 4 exercise their catalytic action in destroying the fumes and the odours. The treated fumes are then evacuated through the opening 9 at the rear of the oven.
Due to the constitution of the passage 3, it is possible to withdraw the assembly of block 1-resistance 2 with a view to changing them without dismantling the surrounding of the oven.
Moreover, the small thickness of the passage 3 permits the same to be lodged between the casing and its surrounding, and permits a reduction in the height of the encased oven while also improving the efficiency of the installation. This procures a gain of space, for example, for equipping a Dutch oven with a gas cooking hob.
In conformity with a modification of embodiment of the invention, not represented in the annexed drawing, the outlet passage for the fumes may be constituted in the form of a box, containing the catalytic block and its resistance, fixed in the interior of the oven and provided with an opening through which enter the fumes to be treated, these fumes being evacuated by another opening provided in the upper wall of the casing of the oven and communicating by means of an outlet conduit with the exterior of the oven, this conduit being likewise placed under the surrounding of the oven.
Moreover, the outlet passage can equally extend transversely to the oven in order to open at one side of the same, or again in the direction of the depth in order to open at its front face.
It will be well understood that the invention is not limited to the manner of construction described and represented in the annexed drawing. Modifications remain possible, notably from the point of view of the constitution of the various elements, without departing in any way from the scope of protection of the invention.
