203,511. Cowburn, G. M. Cameron-. Aug. 24, 1922. Variable-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing suitable for motor vehicles comprises a plurality of separate friction trains having driving sun gears 2, 3, 4, 5, Fig. 1, integral with driving-shaft 1 which is encircled by driven pulley &c. 16. The first train comprises a loose internal gear 10 and conical planet gears 6 carried by the internal gear 11 of the second train. The planet gears 7 of the second train are carried by the internal gear 12 of the third train. The planet gears 8 of the third train are carried by the pulley 16. Low, intermediate and high speeds are obtained by applying brakes 21, 20, 19 alternatively. Reversed driving is obtained by braking a member 18 carrying planet gears 9 engaging the pulley 16 directly. The sets of gearing are kept in rolling contact by springs 27, the thrust being taken by a flange 49. The brakes 19, 20, 21 comprise bands each having a buffer spring 32, Fig. 2, and each being operated by a Bowden wire 51, 52, 53. These wires and a wire 54 for operating the vehicle brake are led to a control device shown also in Fig. 3. The wires pass over eccentrics 37, 38, 39 which are set in different angular positions and turned in unison by a hand lever 40. Alternatively, the eccentrics may press against levers to which the wires are secured.
