Alloys.-Iron-chromium alloys of the rustless iron or steel type are made by acting on a molten iron bath in an electric furnace with electrodes. made of chromium or chromium alloy: metal or oxide and reducing-agent may also be added to the bath. The furnace, which may be a Martin furnace, may be first charged with scrap which is melted by means of carbon electrodes; iron ore is added to adjust the percentage of carbon, and the carbon electrodes are then replaced by ferrochrome electrodes. Iron, ferro-chrome, or other material may be added to adjust the temperature during the process. The percentage of silicon may be finally adjusted by means of iron ore or chromium ore.
