Furnace fire-places ; grates.-In a refuse-consuming furnace of the kind consisting of a cylindrical, inclined oscillating tube, the tube A has track rings A<1> resting on rollers B<1>, B<2> and receives oscillatory motion of limited amplitude from two hydraulic rams H the heads of which are connected by ropes passing over guide pulleys to points I on opposite sides of the tube. The rams are operated alternately by tappets on the tube. The higher end of the tube is closed by a box A<6> which makes a movable joint with a refuse inlet pipe F and an air inlet pipe E. The refuse-supporting floor of the tube is formed of perforated plates A<4> supported by perforated webs A<5> so that air pases from the box A<6> to the burning refuse through 'the plates A'. A refractory arch A<3> is arranged above the fuel surface. Ashes are discharged to a movable grate G which may be associated with a steam generator.
