A furnace for the combustion of domestic refuse &c. having a continuous and automatic cycle of operation comprises a pre-drying grate, a combustion grate, a clinker producing gas generator and a scraper chain which both supports the contents of the generator and continuously removes clinker therefrom. In the furnace shown, refuse from the hopper 1 passes to the pre-drying grate 3 and then falls to the combustion grate 5 from whence it passes into the gas generator 7 in which clinker is formed and the lower end of which extends into a water bath 12 for clinker quenching purposes. Drying is effected on the grate 3 by the hot gases arising from grate 5 and the generator 7. Additionally, gases from the grate 5 following the route 4 may be insufflated below the grate 3 or clean air may be blown up through the grate to produce combustion there also. Combustion upon grate 5 is effected by injecting into zone 6 cold or preheated air whilst combustion in the generator 7 is effected by injecting steam or air through the nozzle 88. Clinker from the generator is taken by a continuously moving endless scraper chain 10 to tipping wagons 17. At least one side wall 11 of the generator is inclined, preferably the rear wall as viewed in the direction of travel of the chain. The inclination of the wall or walls may be adjustable.
