Clinkers, removing; grates.-A furnace for refuse destructors of the type in which the grates A are slid horizontally by means, such as a ram F, to remove the clinker therefrom, has a shoot h beneath the grate which directs the clinker to a conveyer K discharging at the exterior of the furnace. The lower part of the chamber H, in which the conveyer works, may be filled with water and the heated air and the steam generated by the quenching of the clinker led through a duct K<1> to the furnace. In a modification the shoot h delivers to a conveyer outside the furnace, and in a further modification the clinker is dumped on the floor of the chamber H and transferred to the exterior of the furnace by a ram similar to the ram F.
