Bricks, special shapes of. - The bricks 1, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, of a furnace arch are arranged in rows spaced apart by rows of bricks 2 and are supported by hangers each comprising a clip 5, engaging with projections 3 on several bricks, and a supporting rod 6 attached by a hook 7 to an overhead beam 8. The rod 6 is provided at its lower end with an enlargement 6b which engages with a slot 5<c> in the clip. The nose bricks 14 of the arch are each supported by a clip 5 and a rod 6<a> provided with a hook 7 which engages with an overhead beam, a spring 15 being provided on the rod 6a to allow it to yield to movement of the bricks. To allow the arch to expand, it is supported on one or more sides by a member comprising a steel strap 9 supported at intervals by shoes 10 on rods 11 which abut against springs 12 contained in housings 13. Instead of rods 11, levers may be employed each pressing at one end against the arch and at the other end against a spring housed in a casing enclosed in the outer wall. Figs. 5 and 6 show an alternative construction of arch-supporting means in which between the clips 25 and the projections on the bricks, strips 32 of the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8 are arranged and adapted to support intermediate bricks as shown in Fig. 5. The clips are provided with bolts 30 to engage the eye or hook of suspension bolts 24.
