Abstract

A pharmaceutical composition is disclosed for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions in man comprising a solution of a C8-C12 fatty acid, or mixture of such fatty acids in an alcoholic or aqueous alcoholic medium.

Description

SPECIFICATION Agents for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions The invention relates to agents for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions.
The treatment of seborrhoeic conditions in dermatology is still unsatisfactory in many respects. For the most widely varying reasons, all previously used agents and substances suffer from therapeutic disadvantages or disadvantages arising out of toxicological considerations. In comparison, the agents described hereinafter substantially avoid these disadvantages.
The invention lies in the use of mediumchain fatty acids containing 8-1 2 carbon atoms preferably decanoic acid (C10) and/or dodecanoic acid (C,2), in particular in alcoholic or aqueous-alcoholic solutions. The concentrations of the fatty acids and the mixture thereof in the solvents may be widely varied but will usually be in the range 1-40%. Likewise, the alcohol solvents may be widely varied as such, but may also be widely varied in their proportion of mixing with water or with each other.
The following examples illustrate the invention: Example 1 Decanoic acid (capric acid ) is dissolved in a 5% concentration in 96% ethyl alcohol, and used for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions.
Example 2 Dodecanoic acid (lauric acid) is dissolved in a 5% concentration in isopropyl alcohol, and used for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions.
Example 3 Decanoic acid (capric acid) is dissolved in a 5% concentration in propylene glycol and used for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions.
Example 4 Decanoic acid (capric acid) is dissolved in a 10% concentration in a solution of polyethylene glycol 400, and used for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions.
1. A composition for use in the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions comprising a C8-C12 fatty acid or mixture of such acids in alcoholic or aqueous alcoholic solution.
2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the fatty acid is decanoic acid and/or dodecanoic acid.
3. A composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the concentration of fatty acid in said solution is from 1-40%.
4. A composition according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the alcoholic solvent is ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol or polyethylene glycol.
5. A composition according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein the solvent medium is an aqueous alcoholic medium.
6. A C8-C,2 fatty acid or mixtures thereof for use in the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions in man.
7. A fatty acid according to claim 6, which is decanoic acid or dodecanoic acid, or a mixture of the two.
