Machine guns.- A device for regulating the speed of discharge comprises a spring-controlled mass 5 which is set in motion bv the recoil of the breech-block so as to oscillate in guides parallel to the breech-block guides and thereby time the closing movement of the breech-block. The mass 5 is moved rearwards by the engagement of its finger 9 with a projection 3 on the breech-block or motor piston 11, thereby permitting a tumbler 1 to rise, into engagement with the projection 3 to delay the closing movement of the breech-block until the tumbler is lowered by the return of the mass 5. The finger 9 is controlled by a spring 12, and is released from the projection 3 by passing beneath a tumbler .1 of inverted U-section, the tumbler rising into angagememt with the projection 3 under the influence of the spring 12. When the mass 5 returns under the action of a tension spring 6, inclines 7 on the mass 5 engage inclines 8 on the tumbler to lower it and permit the breech to close. The spring 6 is adjusted to vary the rate of fire.
