Abstract

290,662. S.A.F.A.T. Soc. Anon. Fabbrica Armi-Torino. May 20, 1927, [Convention date]. Machine guns.-Relates to devices comprising a toothed escapement wheel cooperating with an oscillating anchor, for reducing the rate of fire of automatic finearms, and consists mainly in the arrangement in conjunction with the escapement wheel of a diametral cam adapted to be struck eccentrically by a recoiling part of the firearm for rotating the escapement wheel always in the same direction, the provision of means for neturning the cam to the working position after each operation by the recoiling part, a.nd the construction of the device as a whole so that it can be detachably mounted on the firearm, and when detached will leave the firearm free to operate at its normal speed. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the escapement wheel 3 and the anchor 4 are mounted on pivots 2, 5 in a casing 1, which is detachably mounted on the frame 10 of the firearm by a bayonet-like joint 1<1>, 9'. A cam 6 projects from the escapement wheel into the path of a lug 13<1> on the striker 13; and a member 7 is slidably mounted on the casing 1 and is pressed against the cam 6 by a spring 8, thereby returning and maintaining the cam in the working position after each operation by the lug 13<1>. The member 7 is moved away from the cam 6 by the breech-block 12 when this block closes the breech. The lug 13<1> then strikes the cam 6, and the anchor escapement retards the firing stroke of the striker 13. When the striken recoils with the breech-block after the firing of a shot, the cam 6 is freed from the projection 13' and moved to the working position by the spring slide 7. Segments 3<x> of the escapement wheel are left without teeth so that this last movement of the cam is unimpeded by the anchor. In a modification, the spring slide 7 is pushed away by the cam itself when this is operated by the lug 13<1>. In another modification, the cam 6 is made up of two bevelled parts spring-mounted on the escapement wheel, to enable the projection 13<1> to operate the cam in one direction and to ride back over it. In a further modification, the cam is connected to the escapement wheel by a free-wheel device allowing transmission of movement in one direction only, and is operated by a shoulder on the breech-block. Two opposing springs control the cam and restore it to its normal position when freed by the shoulder of the breech-block.
