Abstract
A measuring instrument comprising : means (13, 14) sending an acoustic signal through a fluid, for detecting its arrival and for supplying a first signal (H) in response to its arrival; timing means (1, 3), e.g. VC0(1) and counter (3), for producing a second signal (V) after a controllably variable interval; control means (8,32) for determining the time difference between the occurrence of said first signal (H) and the occurrence of said second signal (V) and for controlling said timing means (1,3) in a manner such as to tend to reduce said difference; an amplifier (7) for amplifying said first signal (H); an abnormality detector (31) arranged to produce a third signal (W) when the magnitude of the output signal (H) of the amplifier exceeds a first reference value; a mistrigger detector (41) arranged to compare said difference with a second reference value to produce a fourth signal (F) dependent on the result of that comparison and on the occurrence of said third signal (W); and an amplitude monitor (40) responsive to said fourth signal (F) and arranged to control the amplification factor of the amplifier (7) so that the maximum magnitude of the output signal of the amplifier becomes equal to either a third or a fourth reference value in dependence upon said fourth signal (F). <IMAGE>
