Abstract
In a method for the surface hardening of a metal workpiece wherein heat is supplied to the workpiece by means of a moving energy beam, e.g. an electric arc, which melts the surface at the moving point of contact, the cooling of the workpiece by heat seepage to the interior of the metal surface results in the formation of a hardened surface. However as the movement of the energy beam proceeds, the metal body progressively becomes hotter, so that the depth of the outer hardened zone increases. The invention corrects this feature by decreasing the supply of melting heat to the workpiece whereby a final hardened layer of constant thickness is obtained. The variation in the supply of melting heat may be achieved by increasing the relative motion of the energy beam and the workpiece, e.g. by increasing the movement of the workpiece past the energy beam, and/or increasing the motion of the energy beam, and/or reducing the power of the energy beam. The invention is of particular application to the surface hardening of cast iron e.g. to cast iron camshafts. <IMAGE>
