Abstract

523,823. Gas burners. SHORTER PROCESS CO., Ltd. Jan. 16, 1939, No. 1421. Convention date, March 18, 1938. [Class 75 (i)] [Also in Group II] Two forms of burner are described in connection with apparatus for surface hardening metal articles, that shown in Figs. 6 and 7 having radial outwardly-directed jet-nozzles T for internally heating a hollow cylindrical article which is gradually lowered around it, and Fig. 10 being a part section through a ring burner with radial inwardly-directed jet-nozzles, which surrounds, and is moved downwardly along, a cylindrical work-piece for heating the outer surface. The burner shown in Figs. 6 and 7 comprises a tubular body 80 with a ring-plate 81 at the bottom, three segmental upper plates 82, and three cooling and quenching fluid headers 83, all united by welding or brazing. Three mixing-chambers (not shown) supply combustible mixture, e.g., oxygen and acetylene, to three pipes 60. each delivering to one of three arcuate distributing-chambers 85 from which lead a number of vertical rows of outlet passages 86 into which the tips T are screwed, the outlet passages in adjacent rows being relatively staggered. Each of three pipes 61 delivers quenching and cooling fluid by way of passages 87 in one of the headers and a nozzle 88 to an annular chamber 90, from which it passes by passages 91 extending downwardly between the mixture passages 86 to downwardly-inclined outlets Q, which deliver it to the previouslyheated zone of the moving work-piece. When the burner is shrouded by the work-piece, secondary air passes to the flames by way of openings 62 in the upper part of a hollow column 57 which carries the burner. The ring burner shown in Fig. 10 is carried on a vertically movable carriage (not shown) and surround the cylindrical workpiece. It consists of a number of water-cooled heads B which, together with a ring-shaped quenching-block 110, are clamped between ring-shaped plates 112, 113. Each head supplied with mixture from a pipe 117, two mixing-chambers and headers (not shown) each supplying half of these pipes. The mixture passes from passages 132 in an inlet block 123, through two tubes 131, to passages 128, 129 in an outlet block 124, which supply the burner nozzles. Cooling fluid supplied by a tube 118 is delivered by a passage 138, tube 137, and a passage 135 and outlets 139 in the block 124, to the space 126 between the blocks, whence it is discharged by a tube 121.
